HAPPILY EVER AFTER
The road of life has many twists and turns. Good friends and neighbors make the journey better.
“We had moved to a condo in South Jersey, in the area where I am now, and I truthfully thought I was going to stay there for the rest of my life. We loved it and it was a beautiful location.” – Yolanda Mazzenga, resident of Woodbury Mews
MEET YOLANDA MAZZENGA, A PEOPLE PERSON WHO HAS FOUND HER NIRVANA.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Yolanda Mazzenga on Tuesday, July 24th, 2018. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
After working all her life, Yolanda is most comfortable being around people and having people to talk to is one of the things she loves about Woodbury Mews. Having a lake view and her own kitchen were two of her requirements and she enjoys both. Although she could cook every meal if she wanted to, she prefers dining with friends. Yolanda also likes being near family without interfering in their busy lives. Whenever she needs groceries, she just hops on the community van. Best of all, there’s always something fun to do. She gets involved in almost everything going on at Woodbury Mews and when it’s time to relax, she simply retreats to the privacy of her spacious home.
Yolanda’s plan to live happily ever after in her South Jersey condo unraveled when her husband passed away after 65 years of marriage and she found herself alone. Fortunately, after thoroughly exploring her options, she discovered Woodbury Mews. Even if you’re not a “people person” like Yolanda, living alone poses a significant health risk. According to the American Journal of Public Health, loneliness is associated with hypertension, risky behaviors like inactivity and smoking, and dementia. As Dr. Marilyn Heins urges in a recent newspaper column, “We must immunize ourselves against loneliness.” Yolanda checked that box when she moved to Woodbury Mews. Have you thought through how you will live your best future? “I must admit I was never thinking about retirement and certainly not about going to a retirement home. But things happen to you.” – Yolanda Mazzenga
HAVE FUN EXPLORING
Even though Yolanda’s children invited her to live with them, she preferred the idea of living independently nearby. So, she researched her options and toured a few retirement communities. She liked Woodbury Mews the best because of the culture and upbeat lifestyle. “I ended up going to three different places. One I did not return to at all, one I did check back with more questions but I must admit right up front that Woodbury Mews kind of really stuck out for me. I came back several times. They just had so much to offer I thought for what I needed. And again, it was near home.” – Yolanda Mazzenga
GET UP AND DANCE
When you remove stress and worry from daily living and surround yourself with friends, you make room for more joy in your life. What could be better? “I can tell you this, I have had musicians here singing and playing their music that I have been so moved as to get up and dance to it and so do other people, I’m not alone there. So, to me that is great, anything that can make me feel, at 82, like I want to get up and dance is a good thing.” – Yolanda Mazzenga
