IT’S YOU TIME
When homeownership feels like one big chore, it’s time to begin taking care of the single most important thing, yourself.
“I don’t want to be in charge of anything ever again, except me.” – Shirley Fletcher, resident of Woodbury Mews
MEET SHIRLEY FLETCHER, A RETIRED CHEMISTRY TEACHER WHO TRADED HOMEOWNERSHIP HEADACHES FOR A FUN-FILLED AND RELAXING WAY OF LIFE AT WOODBURY MEWS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Shirley Fletcher on Friday, February 16th, 2018. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
During her 33 years as a Chemistry teacher at Deptford High School, Shirley would often tell her students how her family didn’t have electricity on their North Carolina tobacco farm until her senior year of high school. They couldn’t fathom it. She attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh and married her husband, a member of the 82nd Airborne, in 1956. They raised two children, one boy and one girl. Today, Shirley has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes are reading and traveling and her personal goal is to learn something new every day. With so many interesting neighbors at Woodbury Mews, she has discovered that learning something new can be fun and easy, especially in the company of good friends.
Gone are the days when one had to be incapacitated to consider moving out of the family home. Today’s choices give active seniors the best of both worlds, a fun-filled lifestyle for today and a secure tomorrow. To make the best of all the years ahead, it’s imperative to think ahead and formulate a plan, long before you’re ready to make your move. Visiting communities is the best way to begin. Join us for lunch and we’ll give you a jump start on your research. “I think the nice thing is that here, if you’re perfectly healthy, you get involved and you do everything you want to do but when your health does start getting bad, you have the option of moving next-door to get more assistance and I think that’s a good thing…to, you know, think ahead.” – Shirley Fletcher
BEST MOVE FOR YOUR LIFE
Widowed in 2001, Shirley soon grew tired of living alone and paying escalating New Jersey property taxes. Last year she decided to make a change. Having often visited her good friend at Woodbury Mews, Shirley was already well acquainted when she introduced it to her daughter. They made arrangements for her to move into a beautiful apartment overlooking a garden, stream and fish pond. She’s been loving it ever since. “I’m very happy here. It’s the best move I ever made except marrying my husband and that was so long ago I’ve almost forgotten about it.” – Shirley Fletcher
BUSY, RELAXED, HAPPY AND SAFE
Shirley has made many friends at Woodbury Mews. They talk, bake, dine and do crafts together. There’s a piano to play, a library full of books and computers to use. She finds the choices endless and she’s not only having a great time, she feels safe, too. “It gives me comfort to know that my children are happy that I’m safe; I feel very safe here. My children are very happy that I’m where I am and my sister said, I haven’t seen you this relaxed and this happy in 25 years.” – Shirley Fletcher
